We’re thrilled to share that the Devil’s Point staircase at Royal William Yard is back in place following a three month renovation. Sparrow Crane Hire had the privilege of assisting in the careful Hiab Crane lift and reinstallation of this multi-award-winning architectural feature, fondly known as the “Stairway to Devon.”
Originally installed 11 years ago and dedicated in memory of Eric Wallis MBE, the 63-step staircase had been removed and expertly repaired by specialists to safeguard its future. Connecting Royal William Yard to Devil’s Point, Plymouth along the South West Coast Path, it rises 12 metres up a historic defensive wall and passes through a 1 metre thick limestone fortification. This vital link on the National Trail once again stands ready to welcome visitors, offering a spectacular route for walkers and heritage enthusiasts alike.
The restoration project was made possible thanks to a grant secured by the South West Coast Path Association (SWCPA), working in partnership with Urban Splash and Natural England. Their combined efforts ensure that this impressive piece of architecture is now fit to serve its community, and delight anyone traversing the coastline, for years to come.
For us at Sparrow Crane Hire, it’s always an honor to contribute to projects that protect and celebrate our region’s unique heritage. We look forward to helping with future endeavors that preserve iconic landmarks and maintain their accessibility for all.
