Keeping History Shipshape: Crane Support for the SS Great Britain

SparrowNews

Last month, Sparrow Crane Hire was proud to support the dedicated conservation team at the SS Great Britain by assisting with essential maintenance high above the historic ship's deck. Using a crane basket, we carefully lifted workers up to the masts to carry out specialist repainting work—an important task that helps preserve this iconic vessel for future generations.

Maintaining the masts of Brunel’s SS Great Britain is no easy feat. Perched high above the deck, the team applies three meticulous coats to ensure long-lasting protection: a red oxide primer, intermediate coat, and final top coat. This process is carried out every five years to keep the ship in prime condition and combat the effects of time and weather.

It’s a job that’s not for the faint-hearted, requiring not only technical skill but a good head for heights! We're honoured to play a part in preserving this world-renowned piece of maritime history.

The SS Great Britain, launched in 1843 and designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, is one of the most significant ships in the world. Now a museum ship located at the Great Western Dockyard on Gas Ferry Road in Bristol, visitors can explore below deck, admire the restored propeller, and experience life aboard a Victorian-era passenger liner.

At Sparrow Crane Hire, we take pride in supporting projects that help protect and celebrate our shared heritage.  Thank you to our friends at Albion Dock and Sharpness Shipyard & Drydock for the business.
