What is a Hiab?

A Hiab, also referred to as a lorry mounted crane or lorry loader, is a powerful lifting apparatus attached to a vehicle, commonly a truck or trailer. It derives its name from the original manufacturer, Hiab, but has become a generic term for this type of equipment.

These cranes are engineered with hydraulic systems, drawing power from the vehicle's engine. They boast impressive load capacities and reach, making them indispensable in industries like construction, logistics, and transportation. Load capacities can vary widely depending on the specific model, ranging from a few tons to several tons, while reach typically extends from a few meters to over twenty meters.

Hiab cranes come in various configurations to suit different needs. Rigid Hiabs are directly mounted onto truck chassis, ensuring stability and maneuverability. Artic Hiabs, on the other hand, are affixed to trailers, enhancing their versatility for diverse transportation tasks.

Some Hiab installations involve mounting the crane directly onto the tractor unit of a truck, offering efficient loading and unloading capabilities. Others feature demountable beds, providing flexibility in deployment.
